Dear Megan, I think your Grooming Fixations project is incredibly clever and inspiring. I'm writing my MA essay at the moment - investigating the simultaneous properties of attraction and repulsion -- the ‘felt’ responses to biological materials used within contemporary art practice. I'm using ideas of beauty, the sublime, the uncanny, and abjection, as methods of analysis. I've written 900 words so far about your Grooming Fixations piece and would love very much to get in touch! - Estelle

Sexism at the Oscars

During his “We Saw Your Boobs” song Seth MacFarlane listed off women who’s breasts he’d seen in their movies. As if this isn’t grotesque enough four of the instances he listed were scenes of rape or the character was raped during the movie.

Suzanne Lacy’s Silver Action was a reinvention of her performance Crystal Quilt in 1987. Hundreds of women over the age of sixty met in the Tanks at Tate Modern 03/02/2013, to participate in a live and unscripted performance of staged conversations. Women from across the UK who took part in significant activist movements and protests from the 1950s to 80s were invited to share their personal stories in a series of workshops, culminating in this day-long public performance. I took part in the performance by assisting the women in group conversations to depart and tell their own personal stories to a transcriber, who typed their stories live onto a projection in the tanks. This was one of the most moving and exciting artworks I have seen and been part of, the use of conversations and visual texts were extremely powerful.

In this new work, UK women are positioned within the context of local and national histories of key social and political movements of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.The Housewives Register (1960), the Ford Machinists Strike (1968), the demonstration at the Miss World Competition (1970), The Grunwick Dispute(1976-8), The Women’s Aid Federation of Northern Ireland (1978), the formation of the Southall Black Sisters (1979), the Greenham Common encampment (1981-2000) and organising by wives of The Miner’s Strike (1984) – among many other actions – demonstrate women’s importance in transforming the contemporary social and political landscape in the last half of the 20th Century. The commonalities in these histories and their agendas are not represented in the public imaginary, yet they do exist; embodied in the relationships, memories, archives and current activisms of older women.

This new work brings together current themes in social and political discourse: ageing, activism, social media and the role of personal commitment in shaping the public agenda. It involves a collaboratively sourced timeline of women’s activism during the past fifty years, including personal stories and experiences and an action at Tate on 3 February 2013.

As this project articulates activist histories of British women, many of whom are now in, or entering, the territory of old age and facing a new set of challenges, it offers a hopeful metaphor of inclusion and social relevance.
